Where the tax comes from

Taxable income is ₹20,19,400, which reaches the 25% slab. Every extra rupee is taxed at 26% including cess, while the effective rate on gross is 10.5%.

When the old regime wins

You would need at least ₹7,35,000 of old-regime deductions a year — 80C, HRA exemption, home loan interest, 80D combined — before the old regime pays more than the new. Below that, the new regime saves ₹2,29,060 a year.

Hike to the next rung

Reaching 23 LPA is a 4.5% hike and adds ₹5,470 a month in hand. Dropping to 21 LPA costs ₹5,799 a month. Check any percentage on the hike calculator.

22 LPA is taxed at 25% at the margin

Taxable income of ₹20,19,400 reaches the 25% slab, so each extra rupee loses 26% to tax and cess. Of the next ₹1 lakh of CTC you keep ₹65,648. The next step, where the 30% slab starts, comes at a CTC of about ₹26,00,000.

Employer NPS at 14% of basic (₹1,23,200 a year) saves ₹52,260 a year in tax. Because the contribution comes out of your CTC, monthly in hand changes by −₹5,912 a month, but the money lands in your retirement account instead of the tax department.
