Tax questions, answered
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4-8 lakh, 10% from ₹8-12 lakh, 15% from ₹12-16 lakh, 20% from ₹16-20 lakh, 25% from ₹20-24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% cess. The ₹75,000 standard deduction and the section 87A rebate (tax-free up to ₹12 lakh taxable income) apply on top.
On a gross salary of ₹15 lakh, taxable income is ₹14.25 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, and tax under the FY 2025-26 new regime is ₹97,500 including cess — roughly ₹8,125 TDS per month.
On a gross salary of ₹20 lakh, tax under the FY 2025-26 new regime is ₹1,92,400 including cess after the standard deduction — about ₹16,033 per month.
Under the new regime, yes effectively: the section 87A rebate cancels tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh, so a gross salary of ₹12.75 lakh (₹12 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction) pays zero income tax. Marginal relief softens the cliff just above that.
This page computes income tax on your gross salary. An in-hand calculator starts from CTC, first removes employer PF and gratuity, then subtracts tax, your own EPF and professional tax to get the monthly bank credit. If you have a CTC number, use the in hand salary calculator on the home page instead.
