Where the tax comes from

Taxable income is ₹16,38,600, which reaches the 20% slab. Every extra rupee is taxed at 20.8% including cess, while the effective rate on gross is 8.1%.

When the old regime wins

You would need at least ₹6,11,000 of old-regime deductions a year — 80C, HRA exemption, home loan interest, 80D combined — before the old regime pays more than the new. Below that, the new regime saves ₹1,90,465 a year.

Hike to the next rung

Reaching 19 LPA is a 5.6% hike and adds ₹5,883 a month in hand. Dropping to 17 LPA costs ₹6,128 a month. Check any percentage on the hike calculator.

18 LPA is taxed at 20% at the margin

Taxable income of ₹16,38,600 reaches the 20% slab, so each extra rupee loses 20.8% to tax and cess. Of the next ₹1 lakh of CTC you keep ₹70,599. The next step, where the 25% slab starts, comes at a CTC of about ₹21,80,000.

Employer NPS at 14% of basic (₹1,00,800 a year) saves ₹33,457 a year in tax. Because the contribution comes out of your CTC, monthly in hand changes by −₹5,612 a month, but the money lands in your retirement account instead of the tax department.
