Where the tax comes from

Taxable income is ₹19,24,200, which reaches the 20% slab. Every extra rupee is taxed at 20.8% including cess, while the effective rate on gross is 10%.

When the old regime wins

You would need at least ₹7,06,000 of old-regime deductions a year — 80C, HRA exemption, home loan interest, 80D combined — before the old regime pays more than the new. Below that, the new regime saves ₹2,20,168 a year.

Hike to the next rung

Reaching 22 LPA is a 4.8% hike and adds ₹5,799 a month in hand. Dropping to 20 LPA costs ₹5,884 a month. Check any percentage on the hike calculator.

21 LPA is taxed at 20% at the margin

Taxable income of ₹19,24,200 reaches the 20% slab, so each extra rupee loses 20.8% to tax and cess. Of the next ₹1 lakh of CTC you keep ₹69,590. The next step, where the 25% slab starts, comes at a CTC of about ₹21,80,000.

Employer NPS at 14% of basic (₹1,17,600 a year) saves ₹48,922 a year in tax. Because the contribution comes out of your CTC, monthly in hand changes by −₹5,724 a month, but the money lands in your retirement account instead of the tax department.
